LOWER SCHOOL

Children in the Lower School generally range from 5- to 7-years-old, and movement between schools is determined by a child’s readiness. Lower School is a time in which academic and personal skills are further developed in reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and the many enriching experience Riley School offers in music, drama, pottery, farm & garden, and outdoor education.

The Lower School students enjoy a large-light filled classroom in which they explore writing, reading, spelling, math, social studies and more. They are well integrated into the larger school community and move about the campus for science, art, music, drama, pottery. In many areas of the program, Lower Schoolers work side by side with children in the Middle and Upper Schools.

Children enjoy a full hour of lunch and recess, where students of all ages interact in unstructured but monitored play time. With a curriculum supported by hands-on learning, our faculty foster a love of learning and encourage questions around which our students construct their knowledge of the world.
