S.T.E.A.M. Day for Girls: "The Art & Science of Nature"

Saturday, April 26th | 8:00am-12:30pm

73 Warrenton Street, Rockport

Explore the beauty of nature through scientific discovery and artistic expression! Led by Riley School’s art and science teachers, girls ages 7-14 who are interested in the intersection of science, technology, engineering, art, and math are invited to join us on our 21-acre campus.

This is a free event, but space is limited!

Schedule

8:00-9:00 – Welcome & Nature-Inspired Icebreaker

  • Name Tag Activity

  • The Art of Observation: Girls make art journals to use for recording observations

9:00-10:30 – Science & Art Rotations (3 Stations, 30 min each)

  • Leaf & Insect Microscopy – Use magnifying glasses or microscopes to examine leaves, feathers, and insects, then sketch what they see.

  • Nature Sound Mapping – Instead of visual observation, have students close their eyes and listen for different sounds in nature (birds, wind, rustling leaves). They can draw a “sound map” of what they hear.

  • Animal Behavior Study – Use the five senses to observe animal interactions between the school’s goats and chickens

10:30-11:00 – Snack Break

11:00-12:00 – Eco-Art & Engineering Challenge

  • "Eco-Sculptures" – Use recycled materials to design sculptures inspired by animals or natural forms.

12:00-12:30 – Showcase of Learning

Girls set up a Nature Science & Art Gallery displaying their work.

  • Each participant receives a DIY Nature Science Kit (seed packets, a mini notebook, and magnifying glass to continue their discovery!)

SPRING PRODUCTIONS

Thursday, May 23rd @ 5:00pm

Friday, May 24th @ 5:00pm

Riley School prsesents an all-school production of Aesop’s Fables Redux! The script, by Susan Pennington, comes alive as a witty narrator helps an inquisitive child understand some famous expressions by exploring Aesop's beloved fables. The lessons behind these expressions are playfully illustrated through a series of the well-known stories, and brought to life by a variety of human and animal characters. These classic fables, such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg, provide a fresh, warm, and fun learning experience.
